This charming and superlatively well made pair of Chisel Toe Norwegians, finished in hand-tinted Antique Dark Oak calfskin, absolutely in the English taste, is by one of the greatest shoemakers in the world, Edward Green …some say the greatest shoe maker, superior to Lobb. I make no judgment between these two titans but the slender lines of Edward Green’s D888-last are very seductive, and the workmanship is indisputably of the highest order. This is about as elegant a sporting shoe as I have seen, just the right degree of extension of the toe to awaken the (to my eye) sometimes sedate Norwegian model. The more I question some of Lobb's contemporary designs, the more I rejoice, as in this case, in Edward Green's. Green, when they departs at all from the spot-on classical, do so in the most subtle ways, the shoes never exaggerated, never overly adorned, never calling attention to themselves, other than by presenting a finely turned and unified design. Green seem not to feel the need to compete with lesser producers by mimicking their ostentations, instead they ply the traditional course with confidence and authority and retain our esteem by producing an ever more refined and beautiful product and, of course, I repeat, one of first class construction.
