Grenson’s Werkstätten sind, seit der Gründung durch William Green im Jahre 1866, auch heute noch in Betrieb. Grenson ist einer der ältesten englischen Schuhmacher, die in langen Tradition das Militär und meine bevorzugten Schuhmacher beliefert. Er ist einer der wenigen Schuhmacher - vielleicht sogar in letzter Zeit einmalig zu nennen - der tatsächlich seine Qualität in den vergangenen Jahren noch steigern konnte, leider im Gegensatz zu anderen, selbst den berühmtesten Schuhmachern, deren Qualität deutlich und sichtbar nachgelassen hat. Besonders zu nennen sind Church’s neue und minderwertigere “Prima Class“ und bedauerlicherweise ebenfalls viele von Lobb’s Konfektionsschuhen. Im Gegensatz dazu sind Grenson’s Stiefel und Schuhe kompromisslos hervorragend gearbeitet, das Design absolut traditionell und niemals lässt er sich zu überflüssigem Dekor oder modischem Schickschnack hinreissen. Grenson ist, besonders mit seinen Stiefeln Jodphurs, Field-Boots und Chukka Boots, zu einem meiner Favoriten aufgestiegen.

Und nun noch ein wenig Geschichte: An Grenson’s Entwicklung eines einzigartigen Flyer-Boots während des Krieges erinnert man sich gerne: ein gefütterter, abnehmbarer Schaft, in den ein Kommando-Messer eingearbeitet war. Im Falle eines Abschusses konnte der Flieger das Beinteil abnehmen und zurück blieb ein einfacher schwarzer Schuh, der sich unbemerkt und sozusagen „in Zivil“ in die Bevölkerung mischen konnte um eventuellen Verfolgern zu entkommen.

Tja, und nun musste der Flieger sozusagen nur noch „über Nacht“ deutsch lernen.... und seine Tarnung war perfekt. Wenn das jedoch nicht klappte, hatte er das „Commando-Knife“, ein doch eher „romantisch“ zu nennendes Gegenstück zu den Maschinenpistolen der Wehrmacht.

Das hier angebotene Paar ist eine wunderschöner, rahmengenähter Lace-up Chukka Boot, ein feinstes, klassisches Paar das, obwohl keine Massanfertigung, ganz gewiss die Qualität einer erstklassigen Massanfertigung hat. Ein charmanter und äusserst attraktiver Stiefel.

Noch dazu ist dieser elegante Schuh mit einer rahmengenähten Allwetter-Sohle von Itshide, das Commando, ausgestattet, ideal für diesen eleganten Schuh, der Ihnen bei jedem Wetter und in jeder Jahreszeit zu Diensten ist.

In continuous operation since its founding by William Green in 1866, Grenson is one of the oldest and best English shoemakers with a long tradition of catering to the military and one of my favourite contemporary bootmakers. Grenson is one of the few shoemakers, perhaps unique in modern times, who have actually improved their quality in recent years, even as the quality of other shoemakers, even the most famous shoemakers, has visibly declined. Notably are Church’s new and inferior “Prima Class”, and many of Lobb’s ready-mades. Yes, John Lobb, who appear to have a “youth complex”, producing new lightweight models that they imagine to be “modern” and “fashion-forward”, but are really only an embarrassment. In contrast, Grenson’s boots and shoes are all uncompromisingly well made, the designs absolutely traditional, and do not resort to any extraneous decoration or misguided flights of fancy. Indeed Grenson, particularly in their boots, Jodhpurs, Field Boots and Chukka Boots, has become one of my personal favorites. 

A bit of history: Grenson is fondly remembered for its development during the war of a uniquely fashoned flyers boot with a fully lined and detachable leg with commando knife. In the event of being shot down the airman could remove the leg portion, leaving behind a simple black shoe to more easily blend into the population and evade captors. Now all he had to do was learn German overnight. Failing that he had his commando knife, a romantic foil for the Wehrmacht’s Maschinenpistolen.

The present pair is a lovely Goodyear welted Chukka Boot, a fine, classic pair of boots that, although not made to measure, certainly of custom-made level of workmanship. 

Moreover this handsome shoe is fitted with the finest, most imitated, and longest lasting high-profile rubber sole on the market, the same sole used by John Lobb, Edward Green, Church’s and Crockett & Jones, to drop a few names, and on that will serve you admirably Winter or Summer, the Itshide “Commando” sole. An ideal compliment to this elegant all-weather, all-season shoe.
